SUMMARY:Sibelius Violin Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Sibelius once hoped to become a concert violinist\, and that ambition shows throughout his only concerto. The Concerto in D minor\, Op. 47 premiered in 1904 and was revised the following year. The solo violin enters over a hush of muted strings. The slow movement is among the most heartfelt in the repertoire\, and the driving finale was famously described by the critic Donald Tovey as “a polonaise for polar bears.” \nAria Volenne performs the concerto with The Centennial Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marta Lindqvist in Boston’s historic Symphony Hall\, renowned worldwide for its exceptional acoustics. The program also includes works by Mozart and Vivaldi.

SUMMARY:Bach: Complete Sonatas & Partitas
DESCRIPTION:Bach wrote the six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin (BWV 1001–1006) around 1720\, during his years at Köthen\, and they remain one of the summits of the violin repertoire. With nothing to accompany it\, a single instrument carries melody\, harmony and counterpoint at once. The cycle moves from the fugues of the sonatas to the dance movements of the partitas\, and includes the Chaconne that closes the Partita No. 2 in D minor. \nAria Volenne presents the complete cycle in one evening at Wigmore Hall\, whose celebrated acoustic suits music this intimate and exposed. It is a rare chance to hear all six works together\, as one journey through nearly everything a violin can express. \nPlease note the early 6:00 pm start. The performance includes one intermission and runs approximately two hours.
